With its clear sea, pleasant summer climate, historic towns, fishing villages and uninhabited creeks, the Croatian shores of the Adriatic Sea have a prominent place in the hearts of the water sports enthusiasts.
The 5,000 kilometre-long shore is divided into 700 islands with several anchorages and ports, abandoned and romantic bays. The country is located in the north-west part of the Balkan Peninsula. Its overall territory is 56 594 km2. It is bounded by Slovenia from the north-west, Hungary from the north, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina from the east, and it also shares a borderline with Montenegro. It is bounded by the Adriatic Sea from the south-west. The country joined the European Union in 2013. The official currency is the Croatian kuna. The capital is Zagreb.
The Croatian shores are often referred to as the Croatian Adriatic. The Croatian shores of the Adriatic Sea lie across a coastline of 1778 kilometers. Together with the perimeter of the islands, this number is 5835 kilometers. The archipelago consists of 1185 islands altogether and is the largest group of islands on the Adriatic and the second largest on the Mediterranean Sea. 698 of these islands are inhabited, the largest ones are KRK, Korcula, Brac, Hvar and Rab. There are two peninsulas in the region: Istria in the north, and Peljesac between Split and Dubrovnik. There are more than 2600 ports in Croatia.
The country is popular because of its beaches as well. Thanks to its diversity, we can find pebbly and sandy beaches as well. The most popular beaches are Punta rat, Rajska plaza, Prapratno, Plava laguna, Telascica, Banja, Bijeca, Kamenjak, Saplunara and Dubovica. Further information on other beaches can be found here. The climate of the country is diverse. The middle regions are characterized by a mild continental climate: summers are dry and hot and winters are mostly cold and wet. The beaches belong to the Mediterranean Arc: the summer is also dry and hot, but winters are milder. In the mountainous areas, summers are cooler, and winters are cold and snowy. That is why we should seek information in advance on the weather of the chosen area or town, so that we can enjoy an undisturbed holiday. This is especially important when it comes to renting a boat or a yacht.
The Croatian cuisine is much more diverse than you might think, thanks to the fact that it has been influenced by the different nations’ gastronomy: Italy, Hungary, Austria and Turkey. You can even find the same dishes prepared differently within the country. The specialities that we should definitely taste are brodet, crni rizot, riba sa zara, fuzi, manestra, pasticada, strukli, soparnik and fritule.
Croatia has several airports. This makes the country a good choice in terms of accessibility and internal infrastructure. The busiest airport is in Zagreb, but smaller national airports can be found in the following cities: Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Pula, Rijeka, Osijek, Boi, Mali Losinj. As the country is rich in ports, travelling amongst the cities can be easy if we rent a boat or a yacht.
Croatia and the Adriatic Sea is famous for the cruising opportunities. Even day trips provide an unforgettable experience. But if we decide to go on longer cruises, we can visit the different rocky shores and sandy beaches and islands as well. The Split-Makarska-Mijet-Dubrovnik-Trstenik-Korcula-Hvar-Split route is amongst the most popular choices, and the Rijeka-Cres-Losinj-Molat-Zadar-Pag-Rab-Krka-Rijeka route, which passes by several islands, is also well-known. Croatia is a versatile travel destination. Young travellers can even find themselves “party islands”. Nature enthusiasts may enjoy the glorious scenery, those interested in culture can visit the old city and couples can take a walk on the romantic beaches. The country has everything you need.
Croatia has a long Adriatic coast and areas in the mountainous Balkans. Its weather and climate are as diverse as the country is. Croatia can be divided into three climatic regions. In the north are the lowlands with a continental climate. Central Croatia consists of the mountainous Dinara Region, with an alpine climate.
The Adriatic coast enjoys a Mediterranean climate of cool, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Winter temperatures range from -1 to 30°C in the continental region, -5 to 0°C in the mountain region and 5 to 10°C in the coastal region. Summer temperatures range from 22 to 26°C in the continental region. 15 to 20°C in the mountain region and 26 to 30°C in the coastal region. The coastal areas have a Mediterranean climate, with mild weather even in winter and moderate to hot dry summers. Humidity is quite low, making the summer heat less heavy than it might appear elsewhere. Spring and summer temperatures are fairly mild, rarely ranging over 30°C, without rain.
Prevailing winds in the interior are light to moderate northeast or southwest, and in the coastal area, prevailing winds are determined by local area features. Higher wind velocities are more often recorded in cooler months along the coast, generally as Bura or less frequently as Sirocco.
If you want more accurate/detailed information about the weather and wind conditions, select a region from the sailboat charter in Croatia destinations tab. Please search for the desired holiday destination within the region and you can find the weather tab under the city tab.
