Location of Opatija

Opatija lies 8 km west of Rijeka in the north eastern part of the Istrian peninsula, on the coast of Kvarner bay and at the foot of Učka mountains. The city is accessible on public road on the A8 motorway from the direction of the Istrian peninsula, on the A7 motorway from the direction of Trieste and Dalmatia and on the A6 motorway from Zagreb.

Can you rent a yacht in Opatija – do I need a license?

Small boats (under a certain horsepower or length), electric boats, crewed yacht charters, gulet charters may not require a license. Larger boats or those with more powerful engines need a skipper’s license. Before you confirm your sailing trip to Trogir, please send us a copy and we will check it for you. OR: [UK] RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate or higher, [USA] Sailing ‘Basic Keelboat’ or higher, [DE] ‘Sportbootführerschein See’ or higher, [FR] le Permis Plaisance Additionally, the following documents are necessary: Valid travel documents: USA citizens: EU regulations mandate USA passport holders to have at least three months of validity beyond the planned departure date from Croatia., European Union (EU) citizens: No visa required. Canadian citizens: No visa is required for stays up to 90 days.

Boat hire Opatija – the main ports

The city’s port, ACI-marina Opatija, is open all year round. The port has 302 mooring places and 35 coastal storing spots and also many services are offered. You can take water and power, but you can also find a money exchange, restaurant, toilet and shower, laundry, yachting store, and a repair workshop there.

The port has also been awarded with the decoration due to its equipment and environmental quality. The port can be easily recognized from the sea from its breakwater. You find the entry from the northeast and a light indicator at the end of the breakwater helps you navigate and sail there. The port is also easy to approach from the coastal promenade, which provides you with a really pleasant atmosphere at night.

Port of Rijeka

Main sights in Opatija

The Saint James church in the centre of Opatija is one of the most important buildings in the city. The city’s history is closely connected to this church and its monastery and that is where its name may originate from too. If you want to learn more about the history of Opatija, the Croatian Tourism Museum will offer three exhibition sites for you. Many buildings expect you here with wonderful architecture, just like Angiolina park. The Villa was built between 1845-1860. Angiolina park still has special plants from the Far East, South America and Australia on show. You can see almost 170 different plant species here on an area of 3.6 hectares.

The coast is still bordered by villas and luxury hotels built at the end of the 19th century. It is not among the most popular places today, but it is an ideal holiday resort for the elderly as well as for those who want to combine a high-quality environment with beauty and silence.

Which period is best to sail from Opatija?

The mountain Učka rises 1, 396 meters above the city, which makes Opatija’s climate mild in the winter. The average temperature in the winter is 7-9 °C, while in the summer the mountain reduces heat. The Adriatic region has a Mediterranean climate with much sunshine, dry and hot summers, and a mild and humid winter.
