Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, in Northern Spain. It is located at the Adriatic Sea, north of the Pyrenees and the French border. Barcelona shares borders with the river Besós in the north and Llobregat in the south. Surrounded by the Coastal Range – part of to the Catalan Pyrenees – Collserola from the west and the Garraf Massif from the south. Its highest points are the Tibidabo and the Montjuic. Barcelona is the third largest port city on the Adriatic Sea.
The most ancient town in the area was inhabited by the Celtic Layetans. They established their settlement between the Tibidado and Mont Tàber. According to legend, the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barcas founded the predecessor settlement of the city. Later, the Roman general Scipio took over before the area came into possession of the Western Goths and the Moors. When Catalonia and Aragonia united, Barcelona was the next leading commercial city of the Adriatic Sea after Genoa and Venice. Their power was shaken in the 16th century, and in 1714, the troops of Philip V of Spain raided the city, destroying most of the town. The city flourished under the dominion of Charles III of Spain, and the port of Barcelona opened again. The city earned back its reputation on the Adriatic Sea in the 19th century.
