Blanes is an excellent charter base on the Costa Brava if you want to combine lively seaside towns, calmer bays, and easy-to-plan daily sailing legs within a single week. From here, many of the coast’s best-known holiday resorts are within comfortable reach, while the Mediterranean climate and clear water create ideal conditions for both relaxed cruising and a more experience-packed trip. The area is especially appealing for crews who want to mix beach time, sightseeing, and vibrant marina evenings in one route. The plans below help you choose which one-week Blanes itinerary best fits your crew’s pace.
Sailing in Blanes

This article gives you an overview of the following topics:

Which month is best for sailing in Blanes?

The most pleasant sailing period around Blanes is usually late May to June, and then again in September. At that time the air is already warm without the peak-summer heaviness, the sea becomes increasingly inviting, and the southern gateway of the Costa Brava feels more balanced than during the busiest holiday weeks.

Spring: From March to May, Blanes slowly eases into the sailing season. Daytime temperatures are usually around 16–22 °C, while the sea still feels fresh, averaging roughly 15 °C across spring. That makes swimming brisk, but sailing conditions can be especially enjoyable for crews who like a livelier atmosphere on the water. Winds are more changeable at this time of year: calm days can give way to more energetic northerly or northwesterly blows, and although the Costa Brava’s famous tramuntana is less frequent and generally less intense in Blanes than farther north, it can still sharpen the sea noticeably. The water is often moderately choppy rather than rough, visibility can be excellent, and marinas and anchorages remain pleasantly uncrowded.

Summer: From June through August, Blanes shows its sun-drenched Mediterranean character. Daytime temperatures typically range from 25 to 31 °C, and by August the sea averages about 24–25.5 °C, making sailing and swimming a very natural combination. Summer often brings lighter thermal breezes and southerly sea breezes in the 8–15 knot range, ideal for relaxed coastal passages. Mornings are often smoother, while afternoons can bring a little more wind and texture on the water. Because parts of the coast around Blanes are open to easterly and southerly directions, stronger easterlies or southerlies can quickly build an uncomfortable sea state near exposed beaches. This is also the busiest period of the year, with lively marinas, fuller anchorages and a distinctly holiday atmosphere along the coast.

Autumn: From September to November, Blanes can be at its most appealing for sailors. September still often feels summery, with daytime temperatures around 24–27 °C, while the sea remains very pleasant at about 24 °C on average and is still around 21 °C in October. Winds become more characterful again in autumn: calm, luminous days can alternate with more unsettled spells, bringing 10–20 knot breezes and a more animated sea. October is among the wetter months, so passing showers and faster-changing skies should be expected. In return, the summer crowds begin to fade, marinas feel roomier, and the coastline becomes more relaxed while the water still keeps much of its late-season warmth.

Winter: From December to February, Blanes feels quieter, clearer and far less crowded. Daytime temperatures are usually around 13–16 °C, and the sea averages about 14 °C, so this is more a season for scenic sailing than for swim stops. Winter on this stretch of the Mediterranean can offer beautifully crisp light and very good visibility, but passing fronts may bring firmer northerly or easterly winds, and exposed sections of coast can become lumpy quite quickly. With fewer boats around, the marina and waterfront move at a more local pace, which gives winter sailing in Blanes a calm, stripped-back charm that many experienced crews appreciate.

Sailing Itinerary Blanes

Day 1: Blanes – Lloret de Mar (2.5 nm – Sailing time*: about 1 hour)
Our destination is Lloret de Mar, which is the symbol of the nightlife in Costa Brava. If you like having a party, this resort is one of the best possible choices thanks to its clubs. Its main beach is 1.5 kilometres long, and despite its great size, it is very crowded. The Santa Clotilde botanical garden is really worth visiting because of the amazing view. You can choose from dozens of cosy restaurants and taverns. Spend the night in the port of the town.
Day 2: Lloret de Mar – Tossa de Mar (5.1 nm – Sailing time*: about 1 hour)
Would you like to relax in a calm environment? Then the “Spanish Saint Tropez” is a great choice. The city has excellent beaches such as the Playa Gran, the Mar Menuda or the Cala Futadera. Do you have plenty of time to spend here? Don’t miss the medieval old city of Tossa, which has marvellous monuments. Spend the night in the port of Tossa de Mar.
Day 3: Tossa de Mar – Sant Feliu de Guíxols (6.2 nm – Sailing time*: about 1 hour)
If you dock here, you can explore many tiny bays surrounded by pines. Beaches are rocky or fine sandy, and they are all very clean. You should also visit the unique fountain in town. The boardwalk is wide and sandy, and it is lined with trees. Spend the night in the port of the town.
Day 4: Sant Feliu de Guíxols – Castell-Platja d’Aro (3.9 nm – Sailing time*: about 1 hour)
This holiday resort has many smaller beaches beside the main one. The city has many bars and restaurants, some of them even offer live music. Day 5: Castell-Platja d’Aro – Palamos (3.5 nm – Sailing time*: about 1 hour)
Our next destination is Palamos, which is most famous for its small-town atmosphere and the crabs caught by the local fishermen. One of the important ports of Costa Brava can also be found here. Day 7: L’Estartit – Begur – Blanes (34.5 nm – Sailing time*: about 6 hours)
After L’Estartit, towards Begur, we return to our first stop, Blanes. Do you like peaceful holiday resorts? Begur is one of the best choices. It is not only famous for the white Mediterranean houses, but also for the ruins of the Castell de Begur castle from the 17th century. The old city is characterised by narrow streets as well as Moor and Spanish architectural masterpieces. There are fine beaches in town. If you are a nature enthusiast, you should admire the Marimutra or the Pinya de Rosa botanical gardens. The latter exhibits cacti in the first place. We also recommend the Castillo de San Juan castle due to the beautiful view. If the weather is clean, you might even spot the silhouette of Mount Montjuic in Barcelona. If you would like to do something for leisure, there is a minigolf course called Garbi Minigolf in the resort. The old city has monuments such as the Santa Maria parish church, the castle or the fountain. As for the gastronomy, order something from the local delicacies in a restaurant.
