Novi Vinodolski is an old Frankopan-castle town set right under the Velebit, the great limestone wall whose bora is the defining wind of this stretch of the Kvarner. That bora can come down hard and fast, so the whole week is planned with a spare day in hand in case it holds you in port. Rijeka Airport (RJK) on Krk is the nearer gateway, with Zagreb (ZAG) the longer inland drive. If the handover leaves daylight, the first hop crosses to Krk or works the sheltered mainland shore; a fresh wind is better sat out at the base. Krk, Rab and the near Kvarner channels give a week in mostly protected water, rarely more than ten open miles at a stretch, the exposed legs the ones to time. Cres, Lošinj and the islands off Zadar to the west are the longer, more exposed reach, better saved for a longer cruise.
