Malcesine lies on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, in the Province of Verona in the Veneto region. It’s 120 km away from Venice and 40 km from Verona and encircles the following settlements: Navene, Campagnola, Malcesine itself, Val di Sogno and Cassone. You can find the Monte Baldo range and the two largest islands of Lake Garda: Isola di Sogno and Isola dell’Olivo here as well.
The first known settlers of Malcesine were the Etruscan around 500 B.C. Through the conquests of Tiberius, however, Malcesine has been taken under the control of the Roman Empire. Malcesine has also been invaded by the Ostrogoths, the Alemanni and the Lombards. In the late middle ages, it was under Verona’s, then Venice’s control. The rule of the latter was terminated by Napoleon’s invasions and after the fall of Venice, Malcesine has been taken under the control of the Habsburg Empire. It became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866 through the Risorgimento (the Resurgence).
There’re two climates mixing in the Lake Garda area: the Mediterranean and mountain climates. Although summers are hot and sunny, showers occur frequently, whereas winters are relatively dry. The lake’s water temperature is approximately 20-23 °C in the summer, however, temperatures in the northern part are always 2-3 degrees lower than in the southern. Due to the precipitation arriving from the surrounding mountains and the natural hot springs, the lake boasts remarkably clean waters of excellent quality.
The two min winds of Malcesine the Ora and the Pelèr provide excellent conditions for sailing. The best time to visit is spring to the beginning of summer, especially between April and mid-June.
Lake Ledro is one of the most wonderful places in the area. If you are seeking pleasant relaxation, the breathtakingly beautiful lake that is nestled in a bay encircled by mountains is a perfect choice then. If you’d like to swim, you can dip into crystalline, excellent quality water here. The lake is very easily accessible, you can even reach it on a walking tour.
The Varone Waterfall is approximately 5 km away from Riva del Garda; multiple signs help to guide visitors. The place has a unique microclimate, you can observe the blossoming of some unique plant species.
You have to climb 115 steps to reach the Upper Cave. The awe-inspiring waterfall is fed by Magnone river that stems from Lake Tenno and its total height is 98 m. It’s a must-see sight for both adults and children.
It’s a general truth in Italy that their world-renowned speciality, the pizza, is a must-try. Their traditional ice cream, the gelato is also an amazing, special treat.
One of the characteristic products of Malcesine is its olive oil of excellent quality.
Drinkwise, their strong espresso and the refreshing Aperol spritz are the most popular. The latter is a delicious beverage of orangey flavours consisting of bitter liqueur, Italian sparkling wine and soda.

Navene Beach stretches by Fragila Vela Malcesine, 4 km north of Malcesine. It’s a public pebble beach that offers a wide range of sports suitable for children too. There’re great bars, pizzerias and restaurants in the area.
The public Val di Songo Beach stretches south of Malcesine. It’s a pebble beach with parasols and sun lounges available for hire and it’s also very popular amongst surfers and sailors. Only 20 m away from the beach, you can find Isola del Songo, where you’re ought to try diving.
The marina of Navene di Malcesine offers more than 200 moorings for motorboats amongst many. All moorings have free access to running water and electricity and there’re showers in the Clubhouse. The marina provides two cranes for hauling and launching boats. There’s a superb restaurant and there’s also bar in the marina and it also boasts a small gym and private beach. Moniga de Garda’s extraordinarily well-equipped, modern harbour is famous for its quality of service. The harbour was built-in 2005 in accordance with the highest building standards. It provides 280 moorings for boats, the size of which can be as much as 18 m. The water depth of the pier reaches 3.2 m. Visitors have access to fresh water, electricity, Wi-Fi and TV.
