Locations in the Aegean Sea

The Aegean Sea is an elongated part of the Mediterranean Sea, located between the Greek and the Anatolian peninsula. It is connected to the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea by the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus.

History in the Aegean Sea

Two ancient civilizations were born on the coastline; the Minoans of Crete and the Myceneans of the Peloponese. Later, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, the Seljuq people, and the Ottomans lived here. The area was considered the cradle of democracy. City-states such as Athens and Sparta also arose. In ancient times, there were many explanations for the origins of the sea’s name. According to one of the theories, the name comes from the city Aegae; others believed that it was named after the queen of the Amazons, Aega, who drowned in the sea. Many think that the sea got its name from Aegeus, father of Theseus, who killed himself by jumping into the sea when he learned that his son had been slain.

Beaches in the Aegean Sea

The shores of the Aegean Sea are very popular, especially in the Greek territory. Islands in the northwest are not as famous as other archipelagos, but we can find beautiful Mediterranean East Aegean beaches with crystal clear water on every island. Besides sandy beaches, visitors can explore several famous medieval villages as well.

Lemonakia Beach, Samos:

One of the most beautiful beaches of the island Samos is Lemonakia, located on the northern side of the island, near well-known tourist spots. Lemonakia, which is surrounded by wonderful pines, offers crystal clear water and soft, white pebbles. The beach has all the necessities as sunbeds and beach umbrellas, which makes it very popular amongst visitors.

Livadi Beach, Ikaria:

Livadi can be found on the northern side of the island Ikaria; it is a large beach with fantastic blue waters and soft sand. It is only partly equipped with sunbeds and beach umbrellas. The beach is located between Armenia and the coastal towns of Gialiskari, making it an easily accessible spot for visitors.

Tsamadou Beach, Samos:

The second most popular beach of Samos is Tsamadou; it is located on the northern side of the island near a tourist village. There is a short road leading all the way to the beach that has wonderful blue and green waters, soft pebbles, and pines. Then during the off-season, the beach is mostly visited by naturists, but in the main season, it is very crowded with average visitors.

Golden Beach, Thassos:

The so-called Golden Beach is located on the eastern part of the island, providing a fantastic opportunity for recreation. It is covered by soft, golden sand and it has crystal clear waters, so it comes as no surprise that it is regarded as one of the finest beaches of Thassos. There is a fair amount of sunbeds and beach umbrellas available, and we can also choose from standard restaurants and hotels.

Emporios Mavros Gialos Beach, Chios:

The Mavros Gialos Emporios is on the southern side of the island near a village. The name actually means “black shore segment” due to the fact the shores are covered with black pebbles. The place is surrounded by wild rocks, creating an atmosphere of a stranded and secret spot. The beach is large, allowing for a great number of visitors. Approach and explore the beach on board of a yacht!

Main sights in the Aegean Sea
