Would you like to relax on an exotic, white, sandy seashore? Or do you wish for an active pastime with different sports opportunities? You’ll find everything you need in your vacation on the Island of St. Martin. No wonder why St. Martin is the most visited island in the eastern Caribbean region.

Location of St. Martin

The Island of St. Martin is on the Caribbean Sea. It can be divided into two. Sint Maarten is on the southern part, which constitutionally belongs to the Dutch Kingdom as an associated autonomous state. This area makes up 40% of the island. Its capital is Philipsburg and has a size of 87 km2. The other 60% of the island is Saint Martin, which belongs to France. The total population of the island is 77 741. It shares borders with the island called Anguilla from the north, and the British Virgin Islands from the northwest. The Princess Juliana international airport is the airport of St. Martin’s Dutch area. It has a very short runway and the planes fly only 10 to 20 m above our heads.

History of  St. Martin

The history of the island started out peacefully. Later, however, despite not being outstanding among imperial holdings, it often became a site of battles. The owner’s yacht changed between the Spaniards, the French, and the Dutch. The old rocks and fortresses are proof of the turbulent history of the island. They once served as protection. Arawak Indians conquered most of the Caribbean Islands, who came from South America. St. Martin was not an exception. In the 14th century, Caribbean Indians followed the Arawak. Christopher Columbus discovered and named the island.

The Spaniards didn’t colonize the area, so in 1630 the Dutch and the French started colonization here. After that, the Spaniards launched an attack against the two nations, who together drove them back. In 1648 the Dutch and the French agreed to share the island. In the following years, the border was a subject of several debates until 1817. At this time the island switched authorities 16 times between the two countries.

Beaches in St. Martin

The magical island of St. Martin has more than 70 km long seashore. It lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. St. Martin is one of the most beautiful sea paradises in the world. From untouched, quiet shores to lively centers, every beach is fantastically unique and reflects the island’s rich variegation. Nowadays, more and more people opt for boat rental, which lets them discover nearby islands and towns.

Long Bay:

Long Bay beach is in the heart of Low Lands that lies on the western shore of the island. This was the first beach of French Saint Martin at the same time one of the quietest beaches here. The bars and the terraces of the La Samanna restaurant are perfect sites for admiring the sunset.

Plum Bay:

Plum Bay is one of the less-visited beaches on the island. The sunshine, the golden sand, and the crystal clear water provide perfect peace and harmony for visitors. The water is rather wild in this section of the shore. Thus, it makes an adventure playground for practised surfers.

Red Bay:

It got its name after its coloured sand. Therefore, it’s not a coincidence that this is one of the most popular beaches in St. Martin. Small restaurants by the sea meet all expectations in terms of dining. The beach is lively and has a pleasant atmosphere.
