Would you like to relax on an exotic, white, sandy seashore? Or do you wish for an active pastime with different sports opportunities? You’ll find everything you need on your vacation on the Island of St. Maarten. No wonder why St. Maarten is the most visited island in the eastern Caribbean region.
Location of St Maarten
The Island of St. Maarten is on the Caribbean Sea. It can be divided into two. Sint Maarten is on the southern part, which constitutionally belongs to the Dutch Kingdom as an associated autonomous state. This area makes up 40% of the island. Its capital is Philipsburg and has a size of 87 km2. The other 60% of the island is Saint Martin, which belongs to France. The total population of the island is 77 741. It shares borders with the island called Anguilla from the north, and the British Virgin Islands from the northwest. The Princess Juliana international airport is the airport of St. Maarten’s Dutch area. It has a very short runway and the planes fly only 10 to 20 m above our heads.
History of St Maarten
The history of the island started out peacefully. Later, however, despite not being outstanding among imperial holdings, it often became a site of battles. The owner’s yacht changed between the Spaniards, the French, and the Dutch. The old rocks and fortresses are proof of the turbulent history of the island. They once served as protection. Arawak Indians conquered most of the Caribbean Islands, who came from South America. St. Maarten was not an exception. In the 14th century, Caribbean Indians followed the Arawak. Christopher Columbus discovered and named the island. The Spaniards didn’t colonize the area, so in 1630 the Dutch and the French started colonization here. After that, the Spaniards launched an attack against the two nations, who together drove them back. In 1648 the Dutch and the French agreed to share the island. In the following years, the border was a subject of several debates until 1817. At this time the island switched authorities 16 times between the two countries.
