Ireland has a mild and rainy oceanic climate and is much warmer than other countries at similar latitude because of the Gulf Stream.
The prevailing wind blows from the southwest, breaking on the mountains of the west coast. Hills and mountains shelter the rest of the island from strong winds coming off the ocean. Inland areas are cooler in winter and warmer in summer than the coastal areas. The average temperature is a mild 10°C. Summer temperatures are around 15°C to 20°C. The sunniest months are May and June, April is considered particularly pleasant. The warmest areas are found along the southwest coast. Extreme winters are rare, and its coastline remains ice-free throughout winter. Temperatures range around 5°C and 8°C.
