From the Bas-du-Fort base, the week’s first decision is which way to turn out of the marina. South is the easiest run, to the sheltered anchorage of Les Saintes; or you head up the lee of volcanic Basse-Terre past Deshaies. Pointe-à-Pitre Airport (PTP) is a short drive from the base. Either way the daily hops stay under fifteen miles in the island’s lee, while Marie-Galante sits exposed to the south-east, one to save for calm weather and to factor into the return plan. Marie-Galante, La Désirade and, further off, Dominica are open-channel crossings, better kept for a longer stay, with a Dominica clearance to arrange.
