Elba and the Maremma gulf from Follonica
At Follonica you sit at the head of the gulf between Punta Ala and Piombino, with Elba square across the channel. The trip hinges on when to make that crossing: it is short in calm weather, but the mistral piles up a sea from the north-west. A first day riding at anchor in the near gulf, waiting the wind out, is often the right call. Pisa (PSA) and Florence (FLR) are each a long inland transfer. Day by day, the calm mornings go to the Elba crossing and the afternoons to the pine-backed Maremma shore. The exposed island leg is sailed only when the barometer is steady, and the run home tucks up the sheltered Piombino side.
