Kavala tumbles down to the water beneath a Byzantine aqueduct and citadel, a real port city looking across to green, marble-veined Thasos. Kavala Airport (KVA) is a 30–50-minute road transfer, with Thessaloniki (SKG) the longer drive west. After handover, the city’s own harbour is the first night’s berth, before the morning crossing, in the lee of the meltemi. In a week you can take in Thasos, its port at Limenas and the near mainland coast in half-day legs, with Keramoti and Skala Prinos as sheltered stops along the way. The one long, open crossing is east to wooded Samothrace and its Sanctuary of the Great Gods, so leave time in hand for the passage back. Samothrace and the coast on toward Alexandroupoli are more exposed miles again, better matched to a longer cruise.
