A little history
Archaeological finds have shown that the area of Novi Vinodolski has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The region was the centre of the Principality of Vinodol. This is where the first Croatian law text, the Vinodol Codex was created in 1288. This document is a very important cultural heritage of the Croatian people, and one of the most valuable documents of medieval Europe. The representatives of nine municipalities passed a law to protect each other from outside attacks.
Another important point is to protect the working class from excessive feudal and judicial powers. From the 13th to the 17th century, the town was ruled by the Principality of Krk, the Frankopan family. In the 16th century, it became part of the Habsburg Empire. In the period that followed Novi Vinodolski was ruled by different powers. It has been part of independent Croatia since 1991.
