Location of Ciutadella

The Balearic archipelago is located in the western Mediterranean. One of its members is the island of Menorca. Ciutadella is the western end of the island. The settlement was built at the end of a very narrow, long fjord thousands of years ago. Its port has been established here, which is now the centre of city life. It has preserved its medieval charm, and among its centuries-old houses, small paved streets are bending. There are many beaches, natural sights and historical monuments near the town implied. The entire island is a member of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its unique wildlife. Islanders want to preserve the integrity of nature, so they turn to their greatest respect. If you are in Ciutadella, you can experience the harmonious coexistence of man and the environment!

History of Ciutadella

The official foundation of the city dates back to about 2000 years, but the latest archaeological excavation disagrees with this. The island was already inhabited by the founders of Carthage. Unknown people lived here who knew the science of yachting and built huge stone blocks. Multiple tons of huge size rocks were carved and stacked. Their dwellings were made without binders, and the stones were assembled with engineering precision. Around 200 AD, other peoples appeared on the stage of history: founders of Carthage, Phoenician traders, and then Roman conquerors. Almost all of the surrounding cultures appeared here. Moorish raised mosques, British raised forts, Spanish raised watchtowers. The game was determined at the beginning of the 19th century: this small island of paradise became the jewel of the Spanish crown. Their spoken language is Catalan but of course, Spanish is used.

Weather in Ciutadella

The island lies on the Mediterranean climate zone. As a result, its climate is classic: a mild winter-hot summer. In winter, the average temperature never falls below 15 degrees and there is a lot of rain. The strong north wind is typical, as the island is practically flat. Its highest point is 348 meters, so the storm passes through everything without barrier. The visible evidence of this is the overthrown trunk of old olive trees. The summer is even more fantastic! It is very hot; the daily average temperature is around 28 ° C. There is a lot of sunshine and there is practically no rain. The wind is easing, but luckily for the sailors, it doesn’t disappear completely. The weather doesn’t feel stuffy because of the air movement, although the humidity is quite high this time.

Main sights of Ciutadella

Old town of Ciutadella

The centre of the town is the area around the harbour. There is no wonder that this happened, as trade flourished here. Buildings serving the sailors were built here, and later on the town hall and palaces too. The Placa des Born is an iconic part of the Ciutadella, giving place for the above-mentioned buildings. Cathedral Menorca and many museums are located in this part of the city. There are cosy cafés and restaurants in every street where you can taste the island’s typical gastronomy.

Markets

Mercat Municipal is a very cosy little market next to Placa de la Libertat. Local producers offer aloud fresh meat, cheese, vegetables, and seasonal fruit. At chowder, you can choose between the catch fished at dawn. Homemade pasta, handmade beer, wine, and leather goods widen the offer.

Torretrencada Talayots

This ancient settlement is about 6 kilometres from Ciutadella. A fence made of stone and funds of houses can be seen since the distance of 4000 years. Pits carved into the rock are lying in the area. Huge rectangular stone blocks stand in the centre, which was built presumably for religious purposes. It’s like a giant playground!

Beaches in Ciutadella

Cala Galdana

Cala Galdana hides in a beautiful round-arched bay. It is South from Menorca, 15 kilometres from Ciutadella. The long, sandy beach is attractive for travellers looking for refreshment. Its water is beautifully clean, even in high season. It has all the infrastructures because this city is the most beautiful resort on the island! Next, to the beach, there are hotels, restaurants, and bars, and you can easily find a shop. You can also hire a canoe, kayak, or paddleboat to explore the nearby narrow bays. The unspoilt beaches of Cala Mitjana and Cala Macarella are just a few hundred meters from Cala Galdana. Visit them if you go around there because their romantic surroundings will be an unforgettable experience!

Cala Santandria

It is a smaller bay but even more beautiful! You will find Cala Santandria next to Ciutadella. The coast is sandy and the edge is rocky. In the sunlight, its water is shining like a jewel. You can rent striped umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds. Don’t miss the beachfront restaurant! After swimming, a large bowl of seafood will feel good with a glass of the wine of Menorca.

Cala en Bosch

This is a paradise for those who like active relaxation. Dive among the coastal cliffs and explore the underwater world. You can also snorkel because the water is so clear that you can see everything at a depth of 10-15 meters. If you like surfing, it is possible here! The beach has fine, soft sand and comfortable sunbeds. There is also a bar and a restaurant serving the guests. There is also a paintball court nearby, after a battle, have a bath in the light of the setting sun!

Puerto Antiguo de Ciutadella de Menorca

The Old Port is located in the city. It is about 2 kilometres long, with a width between 15 and 100 meters. In the 20th century, it was widened by several meters because only small yachts could fit. There are 170 seats, for yachts of max. 23 meters. It is divided into several parts having a separate unit for commercial, fishing, sport and tourism purposes. It is not open 24 hours; passengers are welcomed from 8 am to 8 pm. Its accurately equipped centre meets every need. Repair shop, laundry, internet, fuel pick-up opportunities increase the quality of the services. From the port, you can reach the old town of Ciutadella, where you will find many interesting sights. In addition to the piers, there are many inns where hungry travellers are served with mouth-watering meals.

Son Blanc

The newly built external port of Ciutadella has been open for the public since 2011. It was necessary because the capacity of the Old Port was not enough for the increased traffic. Here, a terminal for cargo yachts was created, but large yachts and cruise liners can dock here too. A breakwater dam was built on its outer edge, making the harbour water quiet and safe.

Port of Addaya

This natural cove lies on the northern part of the island next to a national park. On this side of the island more coves like this were formed owing to the streams flowing in. A breath-taking picture appears on the horizon when you reach its entrance. First, a nearly 300-year old lighthouse built by the British appears in the narrow valley, then the houses by the shore. There are 150 berths for yachts with a length of a maximum of 25 meters. It has good infrastructure too.

Port of Fornells

This town is the well-preserved pearl of the northern shore. Its white houses shine brightly in the sun; its marina is really tiny accepting maximum 12-meter longyachts. There are 115 berths. This country lies a bit far away from everything, here nature dominates. There are no hotels, only apartments or small pensions. Nevertheless, there is a buzzing life here. You can try water sports, golf, horse riding, and scuba diving. The main source of inhabitants is/was fishing; this gives a unique atmosphere to the town. Several reefs and islands emerge from the sea in the surroundings
