This cosy and peaceful city is located in Girona, Spain. It shares borders with Lloret de Mar, Malgrat de Mar, Palafolls and Tordera. Blanes is often called the “Gate of Costa Brava”.
The city’s historical roots in the times preceding the Roman conquest. They were proof of the Iberian activity in the region. The romanisation of Blanes and its neighbourhood started around the 3rd century before Christ. Following the dominion of the Romans, the area was conquered by the Goths, the Moors and then the Christians as well. In the 13th century, when the latter gained their dominion again, important architectural progress started. As a result, the Palau Vescomtal palace, the Església Parroquial church and the city walls were built. In the 17th century, during the Catalan revolution, Blanes practically burnt to ashes, and the Palau Vescomtal was completely destroyed. Another event that affected the town was the War of the Spanish Succession, following which the renovation of the town began.
Costa Brava, where Blanes is located, has a Mediterranean climate. This means long and hot summers and mild, short winters. The warmest months are July and August when we should expect large crowds. If you insist on visiting in the summer, going in the second part of July is a great choice. You will find free spots on the beaches. Or would you prefer visiting Blanes later? Then we recommend the first part of September, due to the peace and the very pleasant climate.
Nature enthusiasts can choose from wonderful botanical gardens such as the Marimutra or the Pinya de Rosa. The one called Clotild can also be found nearby. If you have plenty of time, you should definitely visit the monuments in the old city and the Castillo de San Juan castle. It provides an amazing view of the sea.
There are many products of excellent quality in this holiday resort. One of the most delicious treats of the local gastronomy is fresh fish, especially the famous “gamba de Blanes”. Restaurants combine local and traditional meals with modern dishes. As for drinks, it is worth trying the local beers and fine champagnes.
Blanes has well-equipped, clean beaches. We recommend the two most famous ones in particular.
The beach, which has golden sand, has a suitable location as it can be found in the city centre. It is located right next to the Sa Palomera rock, which separates the place from the beach of S’Abanell. It is 650 metres long and 30 metres wide. They have lounges, bars and restaurants, and you can also try different watersports.
The longest beach in town is 2200 metres wide and 61 metres long. There is golden sand here as well, and it offers services similar to the ones offered on the main beach. If you visit the place, you might choose from popular watersports such as scuba diving, waterskiing or sailing.
The port is run by Blanes Sailing Club. It provides 309 berths for yachts up to 24 metres in size. The club has a café, a restaurant and a sailing school, too. The port combines recreational sailing with commercial fishing activities. Info about sailing in Blanes
