Location of Ploce

Ploce is located in county Dubrovnik-Neretva, which is Croatia’s southernmost county. Its abilities are excellent in several aspects. Ploce lies at the mouth of river-Neretva, it is an important city with a port. Ploce is located almost half-way between the two popular and from a yachting aspect ideal cities: Split and Dubrovnik. A little more than 6, 000 people live in the town, which is also known as the second-largest cargo seaport in Croatia.

History of Ploce

Already Ploce’s name is connected to sea and fishing. The first city inhabitants called the town Ploce. According to legends the name was created, when fishermen of surrounding towns and village were drying their nets pulling those out of the sea and the nets looked like a giant flat blackboard (ploca). The first written documents of its history date back to 1367. Already then it was referred to as a significant port town and it has kept its fame over the centuries. The construction of the modern port that had been planned for centuries, was started in 1939.

Main attractions in Ploce

Church of the Queen of Sky and Earth:

The church is also called white basilica and it is one of the newest churches in Croatia. It is indeed a building recently established, it was built between 1999-2007. The foundation stone was blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1994. In 2009 the church got again in the focus of media attention for another reason. The priest of the church that time wanted to stimulate parents to give traditional Croatian male and female names to babies, therefore he put a list of the most traditional 40 male and 40 female names on the gate of the church. The parents who choose a name from the list received a money prize at the baptism. Besides, the local Memorial Park is also a sight, which was built-in memory of the national liberation war heroes and victims. Tourists can also visit the Saint Liberan chapel on an area of 136 sqm.

Marathon Ladja:

The annual boat and barge marathon, which is an amateur sports event is an event you shouldn’t miss if you can attend. The contest of old traditional water vehicles from Metkovic to Ploce is a real tourist attraction.

Bacinska-lakes:

The Bacinska lakes are a wonderful hiking area, which is between nearby Makarska and Dubrovnik. Everywhere in the karst region interconnected lakes with blue water can be spotted and visitors can get a unique view from the viewpoints.
