You can build an easy, short-leg week with plenty of time ashore, or choose routes with longer, more exposed passages if you want to cover more ground. This flexibility makes Split great for newer crews while still offering enough variety and challenge for experienced sailors. Which month is best for sailing in Split?
The sweet spot for sailing around Split is typically May–June and September, when the days are warm but not scorching, the sea is inviting, and the afternoon thermal breeze often delivers exactly the kind of easy, confidence-boosting sailing charter crews love.
Spring (March–May) is the warm-up act: longer days, a fresh, bright Adriatic feel, and steadily rising temperatures, often reaching about 22–27 °C (72–81 °F) by May. The sea is still on the cool side in spring—around 18 °C (64 °F) in May—so swims are shorter, but sailing days are comfortable and energetic. Wind-wise it can be a mixed bag as the summer pattern isn’t fully locked in yet, but you’re rewarded with quieter marinas and anchorages, and a relaxed pace when hopping toward Brač, Šolta or further down the coast.
Summer (June–August) is peak Dalmatia: plenty of sunshine, warm evenings, and that signature NW afternoon thermal—the maestral—often building into a steady 10–20 knots (and occasionally stronger). Daytime air temperatures commonly sit in the 25–35 °C (77–95 °F) range, while the sea warms to roughly 22 °C (72 °F) in June and often 24–26 °C (75–79 °F) in July and August. Sea states are frequently calm to moderate, perfect for swimming stops and easy passages, but this is also when crowds are at their highest: more boats on the move, busier approach lanes near popular islands, and earlier arrivals needed for prime berths and anchor spots.
Autumn (September–November) is a favourite among skippers sailing out of Split. In September the sea still holds summer heat—often around 23–25 °C (73–77 °F)—while the air cools to a comfortable 23–28 °C (73–82 °F). The maestral often continues to deliver pleasant sailing, and the atmosphere is noticeably calmer as charter traffic eases off. By October the sea cools (often around 20 °C / 68 °F) and weather becomes more changeable; the southerly jugo can bring cloud cover, rain and a bigger, more rolling sea, making flexible routing and well-sheltered anchor plans especially valuable.
Winter (December–February) is quiet and dramatic: fewer boats, plenty of space, but cooler conditions—often around 5–10 °C (41–50 °F) and sea temperatures that can drop to about 12 °C (54 °F) in February. Winds can be more serious too, with the bora—cold, dry and gusty from the NE—capable of building quickly and steepening the sea, so this season suits experienced crews and conservative weather-window planning. Catch a calmer spell, though, and winter sailing delivers a rare kind of Adriatic beauty: crisp visibility, striking light, and harbours that feel wonderfully unhurried.
