Would you like to start your Dodecanese sailing trip from Kolymbia? Kolymbia is a relatively newly established resort town. It offers long sandy shores and natural attractions to its visitors. You can easily get to the coastal towns on Rhodes from its little marina. If you visit the other members of the archipelago, you should expect a longer trip, as they are located on the other side of the island. We recommend this article to those who are planning their sailing adventure in Kolymbia to explore the surrounding islands by boat.

Ports around Kolymbia

Kolymbia Harbour, Rhodes

In the small bay on the northern side of Kolymbia you will find a sheltered harbour ideal for shallow-draft boats. If you are arriving with a charter yacht, plan to get there early, as space is limited and on windier days easterly swell can push into the entrance. Once moored, you can reach shops and bakeries within a few minutes’ walk to quickly restock your supplies. Several well-protected anchorages are located nearby, making it easy to find an alternative if the harbour is full. Rent a boat in Kolymbia and let the island’s hidden coves and crystal clear waters enchant you – without stress, at your own pace.

Faliraki Harbour, Rhodes

This small harbour on the southern side of Faliraki is primarily designed for fishing boats, so charter yachts should only approach with shorter, easily manoeuvrable vessels. The berths fill quickly, making morning arrival advisable. The pier is less protected from easterly and south-easterly winds, so make sure to secure your lines carefully. Once moored, you can walk to seaside restaurants, beaches and a few small shops where you can replenish your supplies. Faliraki sailing, boat hire Faliraki

Limin Simis Marina

The northern part of Symi’s harbour is excellent for charter yachts, accommodating vessels up to 60 meters long with a draft of 2.5 meters. The marina is never crowded, making it a safe, peaceful stop for sailors exploring the Aegean. Water supply, basic servicing, minor repairs and shopping are all easy to arrange. The waterfront restaurants and cafés make it convenient to grab a quick meal between destinations.

Rhodes Marina

Rhodes Town’s modern and exceptionally well-equipped marina is one of the best choices in the region for charter sailors. With 382 berths, it can host yachts up to 120 meters in length and 6.5 meters in draft. Full services are available, including refuelling, repairs, maintenance, water replenishment, laundry and medical facilities, making it an ideal base before or after a longer voyage. Its proximity to the city means that shops, restaurants and historical attractions are all within easy reach. Rhodes sailing, yacht charter Rhodes.

Agios Stefanos Marina, Tilos

The main harbour of Tilos is a quiet, peaceful landing point capable of receiving yachts up to 60 meters in length with a 6-meter draft. Fresh water is available on the pontoon, and basic provisions can be bought nearby. The marina is an ideal starting point for exploring the island’s lesser-known coves, where crystal-clear waters and tranquillity await.

Palon Marina, Nisyros

The eastern harbour of Nisyros is well equipped, protected and safe even in stronger winds. It accommodates vessels up to 60 meters long with a maximum draft of 4 meters. Water supply and provisioning are easy to arrange, and several tavernas and attractions are located nearby. The Zagoras Museum is only a short walk away, making it a perfect quick stopover activity.

Limin Kalímnou, Kalymnos

Kalymnos’ main harbour is an ideal stop for charter sailors, offering all essential services including refuelling, maintenance, technical inspections and water supply. The surrounding area is full of charming restaurants and bars, making it a pleasant place to spend an evening. The marina accepts yachts up to 20 meters in length with a maximum draft of 5 meters. For larger vessels, the nearby Vathi harbour is recommended.

Kos Marina, Kos

The modern main marina of Kos provides space for 250 boats and is perfect for charter yachts, accepting vessels up to 80 meters long with a 5-meter draft. Its dedicated security service, full yacht maintenance facilities, refuelling and water supply options ensure a comfortable stay. Numerous restaurants, bars and accommodations are within walking distance, and its Blue Flag certification adds to its appeal. yacht charter Kos, catamaran charter Kos, rent a sailboat Kos, bareboat yacht charter Kos

Weather of Kolymbia

The temperature never drops below freezing on the Mediterranean island of Rhodes. The average minimum temperature in the winter is 3-5° Celsius, with a pleasant 15° Celsius on a windless afternoon. The temperature of the sea drops to 17° Celsius in this period. In the summer, it can be scorching hot in the area with a temperature as high as 35 °C in the afternoon. The average temperature is 30° Celsius in August and September, with a sea temperature of 25° Celsius in these two months. It is only the Meltemi coming from the northwest that somewhat compensates for the heat, but its presence is less significant in Kolymbia due to the hills and mountains. Sail in Kolymbia! Kolymbia sailing trips

1-week Kolymbia sailing tour

You will sail around Rhodes and also visit the neighbouring islands. During certain eastern sections of your trip, you must be careful not to navigate too close to the shores of Turkey.
Faliraki Sailing Plan

Day 1: Kolymbia – Faliraki

11.53 km (7.16 nm)
You should leave as soon as you have got your boat – your first destination is the popular northern town of Faliraki! Arriving late in the afternoon is perfect for a nice swim before sunset. If you want to explore the buzzing nightlife, you can choose from several atmospheric pubs and clubs!

Day 2: Faliraki – Ano Symi (Synm)

58.69 km (36.47 nm)
Sailing out from Faliraki, continue towards the north and sail around Rhodes Town. Remember to admire the wonderful sight of the capital on your left including the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Your destination today is the northern marina of Symi: Ano Symi. There is an interesting sailing museum here that you should not miss! It is also worth visiting the Byzantine castle built on the hill, providing a wonderful view of the town and the sea.

Day 3: Ano Symi (Synm) – Panormittis (Synm)

30.34 km (18.85 nm)
Your next destination is the southern marina of Symi in Panormittis. The most important sight that you must visit is The Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael. There are two religious museums and beautiful frescoes inside. If you want to relax on the beach, you will find it near the marina.

Day 4: Panormittis (Synm) – Livadia (Tilos)

43.86 km (27.26 nm)

Prepare for a longer sailing trip towards the southwest! You can relax in a peaceful environment on the island of Tilos, as it is not affected by mass tourism. If you dock in the town of Livadia, you might encounter other tourists, but there aren’t as many of them here as in Rhodes, for instance. The only organised beach on the island is located next to the marina of Livadia. If you want to enjoy the beach in a quiet environment, sail around the island and explore the hidden shore segments! The town of Megalo Chorio offers dozens of interesting sights, such as the local archaeological museum and the monastery dedicated to the patron saint of the island. You will find the remains of a medieval castle that belonged to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta on the hill behind the town.

Day 5: Livadia (Tilos) – Kamiros Skala (Rhodes)

42.94 km (26.68 nm)
Sailing towards the northeast, head to the tiny marina of Kamiros Skala on the western coast of Rhodes. You will find a quiet pebbly beach there as well, from where you can walk up to the town of Kritinia which offers a starting point to explore the sights to see in the area. We also recommend visiting the old city of Kamiros where they still carry out archaeological excavations today.

Day 6: Kamiros Skala (Rhodes) – Alimia – Chalki

22.89 km (14.22 nm)
Continue your trip towards the west and visit the islands of Alimia and Chalki nearby! Alimia is a tiny piece of land that became uninhabited after World War II; the only village on the island received the protective status in 1978. If you feel like hiking, now is a good time! You will find an almost entirely unspoiled territory behind the village, and the crystal clear waters are perfect for a nice swim.
Continuing your trip, you will arrive at Chalki. The island – unaffected by mass tourism – offers peaceful beaches and interesting sights. Several monasteries and churches operate in the area. There is also a medieval castle on a high cliff behind Chorio, which was built by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in the 14th century.

Day 7: Chalki – Lindos (Rhodes) Kolymbia (Rhodes)

100.06 km (62.17 nm)
Prepare for a long boat trip on the last day! Leaving from Chalki, you will sail around the southern end of Rhodes, then navigate back to Kolymbia along the coast. You can dock at one of the resort towns along the way – we recommend Lindos in particular. When you return, you can still spend a few relaxing hours on the beach or visit the centre for dinner. If you arrive early enough, you will still have some time to spend exploring the area.
